Jesus Promise to Build His Church

Part 1: Jesus Promised to Build His Church!

John - 17:11
Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

Jesus is building His Church!

2 connerstone

Jesus made a promise and declaration, that He will build His church, and that not even the powers of Hell can stop Him!

Matthew 16:18
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock "I will Build My Church", and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

He is building His church!

The question is, "Are you part of His Church?"

As a result of there being hundreds or thousands of denominations in this day and age, there is much confusion about what the "One True Church," really is.

3 dont miss out

If you have a faith relationship with Jesus Christ, (that is to say, the true Jesus of the Scriptures), you are already a member of His Church, which is the One True Church.

However, it is very common for a person to be a member of His Church and still miss out on experiencing it, the way that God designed.

The Scriptures are clear and simple, about His Church:

1. First, how to become a member of His Church.

2. Then, how you are to function as a part of the Body of Christ.

3. Also, where we meet, and what we are to do when we gather together.

4. In addition to that, Understanding How Important You Are, in the Body of Christ.

5. Finally, knowing how to get along with other members.

Next is a chart of the major denominational divisions in Christianity.

divisions

Jesus is building His Church!

When you receive Jesus, and believe in His name, He gives you the right to become a child of God!

John 1:9-13
9
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
10
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.
11
He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
12
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
13
who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

6 birith certificate

Jesus is the true light, who gives light to everyone.

The question is, "Have you received Jesus, and believed in His name?"

Jesus is building His Church!

Jesus said, that unless you are "Born Again" you cannot "Enter, or even See the Kingdom of God!"

John 3:1-7
1
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
2
This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.”
3
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4
Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?”
5
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7
Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

7 born again

Jesus said to Nicodemus, an old man who was a religious teacher of the Jews, that everyone must be born again to enter the Kingdom of God!

The question is, "Have you been Born Again?"

Jesus is building His Church!

Jesus also says that you must "Confess Him, before Men!"

Matthew 10:32-33
32
So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,
33
but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

Following Jesus has a cost.

9
confess jesus

The question is, "Have you confessed, or denied Jesus, before men?"

Jesus is building His Church!

His Church is one big family; that is, "The Family of God!"

Romans 8:14-17
14
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
15
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
16
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
17
and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

The Scriptures never refer to the church as a place, or a building, or a human institution.10 family

The question is, "Are you a child of God? “

If you are, you are part of His Church!

Jesus is building His Church!

Jesus is the firstborn of many brothers and sisters!

Romans 8:29
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

11 brothers and sisters

When you become a child of God, you have many other brothers and sisters (that is, everyone who has become a child of God).

The question is, "Will you accept them as your brothers and sisters?"

Jesus is building His Church!

God has given you a "Measure of Faith!"

Romans 12:3
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

12 be humble

You must not to think more highly of yourself than you ought.

The question is, "Will you accept with humility, the measure of faith He has given you?"

Jesus is building His Church!

His church is a living organism made up of all those who have been born
of God!

If you are a child of God, you have many other brothers and sisters (that is, everyone who has become a child of God).

If you have a faith relationship with Jesus Christ, (that is to say, the true Jesus of the Scriptures), you are already a member of His Church, which is the One True Church.

3 dont miss out

However, it is very common for a person to be a member of His Church and still miss out on experiencing it, the way that God Has designed.

Psalm 51:1-19
1
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
2
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
3
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.
4
Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
5
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
7
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
9
Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
10
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
11
Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
12
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
13
Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.
14
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
15
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
16
For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
17
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
18
Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem;
19
then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Imagine His Church

Jesus is building His 1 True Church!

Part 2: Imagine – His Church!

John+17:11

Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

His Church – The way that He designed!

His Church is very different from what the modern world has been tricked into believing the church is.

As Jesus said to Nicodemus, you cannot even see the Kingdom of God, unless you are Born Again.

In the modern world, what worldly people see is just buildings and organizations created by man, rather than the Kingdom of God.

He is building His church!

The question is, “Do you see the Church the way that God sees it?"

But contrary to popular belief, God does not, nor has ever, lived in houses made by man.

Acts 7:48-51
48
Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,
49
“‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?
50
Did not my hand make all these things?’
51
“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.

The Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man.

Acts 17:24
The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,

God Himself, by His Spirit is building us together as a people in whom He will live.

Like living stones, we are being built up as a spiritual house.

As the Church, we are a spiritual house, not a physical building.

1 Peter 2:4-7
4
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,
5
you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6
For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
7
So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The Stone that the builders rejected has become the Cornerstone,”

As His Church, We are built on the Foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, with Jesus as the Cornerstone.

Ephesians 2:18-24
18
For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
19
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
20
built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,
21
in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
22
In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

Jesus prepared His Disciples for Their Mission!

Jesus gave His disciples their Marching Orders! Go make disciples.

Matthew 28:16-20
16
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.
17
And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.
18
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Jesus commanded them to go make disciples of all nations:

  1. Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and
  2. Teaching them to observe (obey) all that He has commanded us, and that He would be with us, to the end of the age.

Jesus clarified what it means to truly love Him, by saying "He who has my commandments, and keeps them, it is he who loves me."

John 14:19-21
19
Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
20
In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
21
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

Jesus said that He would send a helper.

The Holy Spirit was already with them, and they knew Him, but later He would be, "in them."

John 14:15-17
15
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
16
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
17
even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

The Command to Wait

Jesus appeared to them for 40 days, speaking about the kingdom of God.

Acts 1:3
He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

Jesus commanded them to wait for the promised Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:4-5
4
And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
5
for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

They Waited, and the Holy Spirit Came.

Acts 2:1-4
1
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.
2
And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
3
And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
4
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Holy Spirit is Promised to All Who Will Repent.

Acts 2:36-39
36
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
37
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39
For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”

That day 3,000  Repented and were added to the Church.

Acts 2:40-41
40
And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
41
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Acts 2:42-47
42
And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
43
And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.
44
And all who believed were together and had all things in common.
45
And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
46
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,
47
praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

As we see here in this passage, that from the beginning, the church was devoted to these things:

  1.  The Apostles' Teaching.
  2.  The fellowship.
  3.  Day by day breaking bread in their homes, and receiving their food with glad and generous hearts.
  4.  The Prayers.
  5.  Selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
  6.  Praising God, worshiping and having favor with people.

The church devoted themselves to these things.

They were devoted to the Apostles teaching, praying together, eating together, sharing with each other, worshiping and having fellowship daily.

We will look at all of these in more detail later.

So, at first glance we see the 1 True Church being His Disciples, who are "Obeying all that He has Commanded us to do!"

I am not asking you, "do you go to church," or, "where do you go to church?"

The real question is: Are you a True Disciple who has devoted yourself to these things?

If you are devoting yourself to these things, that is great!

Keep being devoted to these things, and you will experience His 1 True Church, and you will never regret it.

If you have not devoted yourself to these things, the real question for you is: What in the world are you living for?

Now if you are really interested in seeing what the 1 True Church looks like up close, continue on to the next topic, "1 True Church - Up Close!".
